Demountable classrooms have been used in New South Wales for 40 years and are regarded by many in the community as providing inferior teaching environments compared to permanent classroom buildings. Demountable classrooms account for 12% of all government classrooms providing teaching space for around 125,000 pupils each day.
This project examines the economic, social and environmental performance of demountable classrooms across the diverse climates of New South Wales. The project brings together the latest research into indoor environmental quality and its influence on teacher and student performance, together with research into the thermal performance of building fabric. The project seeks to set out a series of “solution sets” that will allow the NSW demountable classroom to become an international exemplar of economic, social and environmental sustainability for the next generation.
