An example of the closest possible collaboration between Architect and builder: The builder and his family were also the client; the architect acted as project manager programming much of the site work.
The house was purchased as a derelict shell with the first floor structure in place but the roof incomplete. Some work was done to the outside but most of the design work concentrated on organising the internal spaces to create a welcoming and interesting family house. A house that has a subtle but clearly defined separation of public and private family spaces.
The entrance hall is tallest space in the house with light pouring in thorough a roof light at the very top. Opening off here is the large family and entertainment spaces and it is only from these that it is possible to climb the stairs, pausing at a landing looking back into the entrance, to the bedrooms with the parents safely on one side of the central dividing volume and the children on the other.
Designed and constructed in just 6 months the project was only possible because of the close cooperation and trust on site between the client, tradesmen and the architect.
