Tracy Emin Library, Kikandwa, Uganda

This commission came as a result of Tracy Emin offering to pay for a new Library at Forest High School in Kikandwa. PEAS asked for a "Landmark building" providing two rooms with room for expansion. PEAS also asked for the design to be complete by the end of the weekend!

The objective of the design is to create a sense of entrance and transition from the hubbub of the school to a more peaceful studious environment. The building is constructed around a large tree close to the centre of the school. The tree provides shade and actually helps cool the building through evaporation from the leaves (transpiration).

The courtyard is now a very well used and popular space. The library roof overhangs the courtyard by around two meters to create a large sheltered external space which can be used even during rain storms.

We worked closely with the builders to learn about their own construction methods and explain our ideas.
